Quilt Exhibit: If you haven’t already, stop by the Government Center Atrium and see “Quilts: Art Quilts to Antique Quilts” curated by Cheryl Collart. Challenge: Color/Emotion Connection
Bring a 12.5″x12.5″ modern quilt block:

  1. Select a word from the list:
    Tropical Vital Earthy Rich Regal Moving Energetic Professional Elegant Fresh Trendy Nostalgic Magical Dependable Subdued Refreshing Outdoors Hot Powerful Romantic Classic Sad
  2. Choose three or four colors that exemplify the word you chose. Paint chips were provided at the May meeting. If you weren’t there, use anything you want as a color source – paint chips, paint, crayons, pens!
  3. Design a modern block (12.5″x12.5″) using your colors to respond to the word.

Opportunity Quilt: Name? Do you have a name for our quilt?  There will be a sign-up sheet for suggestions of names, and we will vote on a name at the meeting.

Philanthropy:  What local organizations would you like to see our Guild support? There will be sign-up sheets at the meeting!

Library: Judy Hunt, Library Chair, has organized the growing selection of books and magazines available to check out for a month.  If you have an item at home, please return it at the meeting so that it’s available for the next reader.

Step up: 

  1. We need a Quilt Host for the Opportunity Quilt.  This person will keep the quilt and arrange for it to be shown at various guilds and public places where opportunity tickets may be sold.
  2. Opportunity Ticket organizer – a person who will have the tickets printed and keep track of who has checked out tickets.  The recommendation last year was that the tickets come already numbered.

April’s Survey and Brainstorming Session: Results of April survey will be presented during the May meeting. It is very exciting to see so many thoughtful and focused responses!

Opportunity Quilt: Tisha Maeda has agreed to quilt the Opportunity Quilt! Very pleased to have this project underway. At the May meeting, bring your suggestions for the name of our new quilt.

Fundraising: There’s been a suggestion of holding a one-day Quilt Show at a free venue for small admission charge. All modern quilts. Possible locations in downtown Ventura with lots of foot traffic.

May Meeting Guest Speaker: In response to all the requests for more information about color and the use of color in quilts in the “What do I want to learn” question on the survey last month, Judy Chaffee has arranged for Christine Martin to speak at our meeting. We will also have a color-related activity.

April 2016 Member Meeting details

Membership:  The Ventura Modern Quilt Guild calendar year starts in January, but you may join at any meeting during the year.  Dues are $50/year, and are prorated for new members.

Challenges:  Based on the Skill Builder presentation by Kyle Crowner and Judy Chaffee in March on the aesthetics of Josef Albers, make a 12 ½” block using values of ONE color (color chips distributed at the meeting) or your own selection of one color, from light value to dark value of the same color.  You may donate your block to the guild to be used in donation quilts later in the year.

Opportunity Quilt:  A dedicated group met on Saturday, March 19th, and spent the morning arranging the “Modern Sawtooth” blocks that were made and donated to the guild for this quilt.  The blocks were transferred to a mobile design wall and taken home by Sarah Wilkerson.  She entered the design into her CAD program and developed the measurements for the sashing between all the blocks.  Thank you, Sarah, for taking on this project for us!

Do you have a name for our opportunity quilt?  There will be a sign-up sheet for suggestions of names, and we will vote on a name at the May meeting.

Another group met on Saturday, April 2nd, at Superbuzzy for a day of piecing.  Progress is being made, thanks to Sarah’s wonderful CAD printout!  Now we are looking for a quilter who will have time to quilt this lovely sawtooth treasure for us, hopefully in time to have on display during the Central Coast Shop Hop on June 3, 4, and 5.   I think we have someone to put the binding on.

Philanthropy:  It was great to hear from representatives from CARL (Canine Adoption and Rescue League) and Surf Cats at the March meeting when VMQG donated dog beds and cat beds.  At the April meeting there will be a clipboard for members to write down the names of other organizations that may benefit from receiving modern quilts.  It is helpful if you will also list the name of the contact person at that organization.

“Many hands make light work” has been a saying for generations.  VMQG needs some members to step forward to work on the Philanthropy Committee.  Maybe one person would like to contact organizations to see how many quilts they could use and what size they need, another couple of members could choose modern patterns and prepare kits for members to take home from the meetings, and another person might enjoy scheduling “sewing-in” events where members gather to work together on donation quilts. There will be sign-up sheets at the meeting!  Please share your skills with the group.

Round Robin exchange:  Participants have had their first “go” at creating a row to compliment the original row received in March. Please remember to keep your progress a secret and pass the bag/box of rows and accompanying fabric to the next person in line. If you have forgotten the order, check with Gladys at the beginning of the meeting and she will set you up.

Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds – commonly called SCCQG – will be meeting on April 9th at the Carson Community Center in Carson (in Orange Country) for their annual “Meet the Teachers” presentations.  VMQG is a member of SCCQG, and we hope to have a couple of representatives who will attend to learn about speakers from Southern California who would be appropriate for a modern quilt guild.  If you are interested in attending and/or carpooling, please contact Patrice at president@venturamodernquiltguild.com.

Seeking entries – “Quilting in Paradise – Santa Barbara County”

From The Coastal Quilters of Santa Barbara and Goleta –

We are planning a special exhibit for our upcoming quilt show in September 2016 called “Quilting in Paradise – Santa Barbara County”.

We are looking for small quilt entries 24×30 either horizontal or vertical that are inspired by Santa Barbara County. The special exhibit is open to any one that resides in the tri county area – San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara or Ventura Counties that wishes to make a quilt that depicts Santa Barbara County to be juried into this special exhibit.

March 2016 Member Meeting details

Membership: If you did not pay your Membership dues in February, you have been taken off the Ventura MQG roster as well as the overall MQG membership. Never fear, though, you may rejoin at any meeting and get back on the rosters so you have access to cool MQG happenings and of course hang with your Modern quilty buddies.

Challenges: The Nametag Challenge Block continues. We want to remind everyone to make it and wear it. The remembering-to-wear-it part is the hardest, I know. Check out the inspiration name tags at venturamodernquiltguild.com/challenges

Opportunity Quilt Blocks: March is the time we need to have all the Opportunity Quilt Challenge blocks turned in so we can start to design it at the Sew-in on March 19. See the tutorial page for guidelines and inspiration. Did anybody notice the number of donated charity quilts at Quilt Con with Sawtooth Stars?  They stole our ideas (I took photos so we know who they are) and we are gonna steal them right back!

Philanthropy: Some of you still have a dog or cat bed kit to finish, so bring it in to Stacey.  We will be giving them to CARL and Surf Cat Cafe. We are also ready for suggestions of charities we could support in 2016. Give the name and contact info of your charity to Stacey so we can review them and vote on which we want to support.  Remember, it does not have to be an organization that we give a pile of quilts to, but maybe one that could use a beautiful one for an auction….lots of worthy causes out there we can support.

Desperately Seeking Chair: We need someone to step in for Stacey in Philanthropy!  This can be a shared Chair, so grab a friend and talk to Patrice right now.

Sew-In: We’ll be working on the Opportunity Quilt as well as our own work on March 19, Grace Lutheran Church,  6190 Telephone Rd. in Ventura, 9 am-4pm. Bring machines, sewing essentials and extension cord.

Need a Quilt Mum and Host: When the Opportunity Quilt is done, we need a Quilt Mum and a Host.  Adventure! Travel! Meet new people! See Patrice before these fun positions are snatched up!

Library:  If you have an outstanding library item, bring it back so someone else can check it out.  Judy our Librarian, doesn’t usually get cranky, but it’s best to not provoke her…..Donate your MODERN books and magazines to Judy Hunt, Library Chair.

Theme: Exploring the Modern Quilt movement and its dynamic relationship with classic Traditional Quilt design.

The Modern quilt movement is nearly a decade old and its proponents are a fast growing segment of the quilting population*. Modern quilting began as an online community in the early 2000’s and quickly grew to an international movement of like-minded sewists who make quilts that are primarily functional (as opposed to quilts made primarily as “art”) and inspired by modern design: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive use of negative space, and alternate grid work.

Most of these characteristics are not found in “Traditional” quilt design, the formal, pattern-based repetitive blocks of printed fabric set in rows, with an emphasis on construction precision, practiced by most quilters in the 20th century.
This tension between classic Traditional and Modern quilt design has lessened in recent years as Modern quilters consider traditional patterns in fresh and exciting new ways. This “Modern Traditionalism”, the redesign of classic quilt designs, is what we will explore in an exhibit of 40 + juried quilts from US and International quilters.
