Kids are getting into sewing

Here’s a link to a great article on Boing Boing about the new fad among young girls: sewing. Here’s two quotes from the article:

“Young women and girls are reclaiming that image,” says Luna’s mom, Mimi Ito. “They’re making things that are quirky and funky and tied to a punk DIY aesthetic.” Mimi thinks there’s a culture shift going on, even though we still have those old images of what crafting means.

“What Luna has taught me through sewing,” Mimi says, “Is there’s this whole dimension of technical and geeked-out practice that’s much more girl-facing and girl-friendly.

Sounds like a new crop of modern quilters in the making to me.

Modern Quilter Profile: Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts

There are so many fantastically creative people out there designing and making modern quilts these days! It’s exciting to be a part of this movement, with all the energy and creativity swirling about… I’ve been a fan of Julie Herman’s work for some time, and recently (selfishly!) started carrying her quilt patterns at superbuzzy.

Alissa Haight Carlton – Reception & Book Signing!

Please note: Unfortunately, due to some health concerns with her pregnancy, Alissa has had to cancel the scheduled book signing. We are talking with her about the possibility of re-scheduling a visit in late summer/early fall once baby has safely arrived. Thanks so much for your interest!

2012 Ventura County Fair

Just received information for the 9th Annual Ventura County Fair Quilt Challenge and 2nd Annual Quilt Block Challenge. The theme for this year’s fair is “Rides, Ribbons & Rodeos”. For the Block Challenge, the quilter needs to create a 12 1/2 by 12 1/2″ block interpreting the theme. The blocks will be used to create a quilt that will be sold at auction to benefit the Ventura County Fair Foundation. For the Quilt Challenge, the quilter needs to interpret the theme in a wall hanging. I’ve scanned the pages with the specific requirements and deadlines (couldn’t find the info online) and uploaded them here.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if the VMQG had some representation at the fair this year?!? Just sayin’….

Pictures from our February meeting.

Our two photographers at the February meeting (Kelly and Becky) have uploaded photos here and here.  I’ll (soon-ish) update the post for the February meeting with some of these pictures. Until then please look them over. If you want a picture taken down please email me here and we will do so promptly. If you find a picture of yourself please take a minute to leave a comment with your name/description of the quilt. Thanks!
