Astronomical Block Challenge

As promised, here is the blog post regarding the Astronomical Block Challenge, that I originally posted November 16, 2013.

4/29/14 Update : Our vice president Scott offered to bundle up and  mail all our VMQG members’ blocks that are turned in to him by our July meeting.

Here is the original post:

You are invited to participate in a block challenge with NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg!   Read on for all the info.

According to NASA:

International Space Station Expedition 37 Flight Engineer Karen Nyberg of NASA, a lifelong lover of sewing, is inviting fellow crafters to join her in stitching together a global community space quilt.

Nyberg, who recently returned from her mission aboard the orbiting laboratory, recently shared a star-themed quilt block she was able to complete during her limited free time in space.  She is now inviting quilters from the public to create their own star-themed quilt blocks to help celebrate her mission and passion for the quilting arts.

“Now that I’ve tried my hand sewing in space, I can say one thing with certainty: it’s tricky,” Nyberg said in a video sent down from the space station. “This is what I’ve made. It’s far from being a masterpiece, but it was made in space. I’m inviting all of you to create your own star-themed quilt block. We’ll be combining them with my block to create a quilt for next year’s 40th anniversary International Quilt Festival in Houston. I can’t wait to see what we make together.”

Check out this great YouTube video of Karen Nyberg and her block on board the International Space Station.

Here are the details of the challenge.  It is important to read all the details in the pdf since there are restrictions as to block size and other design aspects. There is a limit of one block per person. The blocks are due in Houston by August 1, 2014, so you have plenty of time!!  We can’t wait to see what great star themed modern blocks you come up with!!

To get you started here is a link from Ellison Lane Quilts to a bunch of tutorials, some of which are modern looking star blocks.

Have fun!!

November Block Challenge

We had a fantastic November meeting.  VMQG member and Associate Professor of Art at CSUCI, Liz King introduced us to a really cool app named Kuler.

Kuler

Once you go to the site, you can upload a photo (after clicking the camera icon on the upper right side of the page). If you click on the above photo, it will enlarge and you will actually be able to see the camera image.  😉 Kuler will give you a 5 color palette based on your photo.

Color rule

If you expand the Color Rule menu you will get the option to change the color scheme.

Here is a cool YouTube video which covers the iPhone app and how to use it.

Here is a great video on using the web app.  I haven’t had time to watch it all the way through, but the first minute was great! 😉

Our block challenge is to create a modern block where the color palette is derived using Adobe Kuler.  Here is the link to the site.  Here is a link to the app for your iPhone.  Both will create a 5 color palette from an image or photograph. Along with your completed block, please bring your source photo or image from which the inspiration was taken.

Check out the YouTube videos and give it a try! It’s fun!  If you have any issues or questions regarding this challenge, please leave them in the comment section of this post.

If you find yourself app-challenged and ready to bail on this block challenge, you can use an alternate method of deriving a palette from your photo or image.

Have fun!!

Meet Your Candidates! (2014)

These are your candidates for the Ventura Modern Quilt Guild‘s 2014 executive board. Voting will take place during our November 11th, 2013 meeting.

1. Andres Rosales – President

 2. Scott Griffin – Vice-President

 3. Stacey Riddle – Communications Administrator

 5. Maureen Timmons – Treasurer

 6. Sarah Wilkinson – Secretary

Here are your candidate statements:

Andres Rosales:

Hello, I’m Andres and I’ve served as your Communications Administrator for two years. In that time I’ve helped in most aspects of running the VMQG. I’m very excited to see the VMQG grow next year and to work with the new board.

Stacey Riddle:

I have been sewing since my teens and only recently started quilting. Once I saw the Modern Quilt Guild I was hooked! I soon afterwards discovered the brand new Ventura Chapter and I tentatively began attending my first Quilt Guild. I am amazed by all the talented artists I have met and continue to be inspired with every meeting. On the Communications side of things, I am currently employed (and have been for the last 20+ years) as a systems administrator. I am currently working for a cloud service provider, providing back-end network support. I do love working with all things technical and I do hope I may continue to be of service as our Guild’s Communications Administrator.

Maureen Timmons:

I have been quilting since, yikes, the 70′s! I discovered the LA Modern Quilt Guild in 2010 and have been obsessed with the modern aesthetic ever since. I love quilts and fabric! Yes, I realize that having a humongous stash of fabric hardly qualifies me to be treasurer, but, hey, it is an example of my passion for the craft! As your outgoing president, I understand the need for detailed and accurate records. I have past experience being a treasurer for another guild. I am familiar with accounting software, financial statements and tax reporting. I take extremely seriously the job of being the steward of your guild funds. I would greatly appreciate your vote for treasurer.

Sarah Wilkinson:

I have been quilting since 1998 and come from a long line of quilters. I love being a member of VMQG and I have never missed a meeting since the guild was founded. I work in the estimating department of a construction firm, and though my job deals more with numbers, I have good computer skills and can take complete notes. Also, I know I can do the job because I was previously the secretary for the Heritage Valley Quilters Guild, many years ago.

October Meeting Reminder

Date:   Monday, October 14th
Time:   6pm to 8pm (superbuzzy open at 5pm)
Location :  superbuzzy  (directions)

Don’t forget your challenge blocks! The challenge was to make something in the modern aesthetic using hexagons.

Gerv, our wonderful scissors (and more) sharpener will be at our meeting Monday night.  Don’t forget to bring your dull scissors, etc. to have them sharpened during the meeting!  See your email meeting reminder for all the details.  Since his craft requires daylight this will be the last chance we will get to have our scissors sharpened this year.  🙁

We want to give a big “Thank You!” to Kelly S., Becky and Maureen for bring snacks to our October meeting.

Vice-President Rob will be holding a raffle during the meeting. Tickets are two ($2.00) dollars each or 3 for five ($5.00) dollars.
