March 2015: Getting to know Judy Chaffee

Judy started quilting over 34 years ago! Her interested in quilting started after collecting fabric from all the baby clothes she had made for one of her daughters. She intended to hand-sew the baby clothes together to give her daughter a queen size quilt for her wedding. Sadly, the partial quilt and scraps were lost in her move to California (from Michigan) 12 years ago. She learned to quilt after moving to California when her younger daughter asked for a Halloween patchwork quilt for a king sized bed. More

  • Challenge – “Marsala” Color of the Year: Create a 12.5″ x 12.5″ unfinished quilt square which incorporates Marsala (Pantone’s Color of 2015) made in the modern aesthetic. If you choose to do so, your quilt square can be donated for an upcoming VMQG philanthropy quilt.   • Round Robin Quilts continues… 14 quilters jumped aboard! You can see the list of participants (and the order of the Round Robin) on the Challenges page on the website.
  • Slideshow fun: Traudel, Lynn, Ellen and Kelly’s photos of QuiltCon faves and those from Scott and Georganna from Road to California will be shown and briefly talked about. If you had faves from these shows get your photos to Georganna by Sunday, March 8. 
  • Skill Builder Speaker: Becky H will give a tour of the updated VMQG website and its features. She’ll also answer any social networking or general electronic questions you may have.
  • VMQG Library: We now have a book/pattern/magazine lending library! Check out an item and get inspired!
  • Snacks: Becky H., Kelly S., and Barbara O. have signed up to bring snacks. Thanks to Gladys, Annie and Georganna for bringing snacks last month — and to Tisha, Hospitality Chair.
  • Raffle: Don’t forget to bring extra bucks for our always-fabulous raffle. One of the fab items will be a one day entry to the Glendale Quilt Show! Thanks to Strawberry PatchesJoy’s Fabrics, Jillily Studio, and Fiberworks for their great donations of fabrics, books and notions.

Texas Museum looking for Modern Quilts

The Modern Quilt Guild invites digital submissions from MQG members of their original quilt art created after 2005 for a juried exhibition planned at the Texas Quilt Museum for January – March 2016, sponsored exclusively by EZ Quilting by Simplicity Creative Group.  The jury committee consists of Karey Bresenhan and Nancy O’Bryant Puentes, co-directors of the Museum, assisted by Dr. Sandra Sider, Museum Curator.  They plan to select approximately 18 quilts for the exhibition.

There are no size limitations for the quilts and no entry fee, but please note that the quilt cannot have been exhibited within 200 miles of La Grange, Texas, during 2015, including at QuiltCon in Austin. DEADLINE for submissions to be received by the MQG: April 30, 2015, jurors’ notification of accepted quilts via email by August 31, 2015.

Calling all quilters – National Quilt Museum Silver Anniversary Show

National Quilt MuseumThe National Quilt Museum Announces 25th Anniversary Juried Contest – Over $40,000 in prizes will be awarded.

In 2016 The National Quilt Museum will be celebrating its 25th year. The Museum was established in 1991 with the mission to honor the work of today’s quilters and bring it to new audiences worldwide. Over the past 25 years, millions of people from all 50 US states and over 70 foreign countries have experienced this extraordinary art form through the Museum’s in-facility and traveling exhibits, educational programs, and advocacy efforts.

To celebrate the past 25 years and herald the future of the art, quilters around the world are invited to enter quilts that showcase their most innovative use of materials and techniques in our 25th Anniversary Contest, The Gala of the Unexpected. The competition gives quilters an excellent opportunity to share their work with people across the country. Through exhibition, publications, and promotional efforts, the quilts juried into this contest will be seen by thousands of art enthusiasts.

The deadline for submission is December 1, 2015.

Greg and I had a great time at Road to California this year…in fact, we went both Saturday AND Sunday! I finally purchased my new Innova long-arm quilter…3-weeks and it’s in my home! So many great quilts and incredible inspiration at the show.

Member exhibition: “Rendered into Pieces”

Rendered into PiecesOur own Kathy Musashi, with Jerilee Petralba, will be presenting “Rendered into Pieces — a digital/cloth collaboration”. Running from January 26 through February 18, 2015 at CSUCI’s Palm Gallery, Camarillo. Reception is on Thursday, February 12!

About the Show

Intrigued with the idea of a collaborative work, K. Musashi and J. Petralba sought to bridge the gap creatively between their vastly different artistic backgrounds. Together these artists have created a powerful visual and tactile experience that perfectly weaves to robust mediums into something entire new. Come and enjoy a treat for your senses with this fresh, fun and interactive exhibition where you are note only able to interact with the art, but take a piece home with you.

  • Round Robin Quilts kickoff: Join the fun! Find out more about what you need on our Challenges page on the website. Don’t be shy, and don’t think it is going to take up too much time — just one border per month is all you have to add. It can be as simple or complicated as you want. At the June meeting, you get back a completed top, just like magic!
  • New Benefit of Membership: We’ll be rolling out an exciting new perk to our Members! You’ll have to come to the Meeting to find out more!
  • Skill Builder Speaker: Home Machine Maintenance by Jennifer Anderson from Sewing Machine Warehouse. You can’t make a great quilt if you machine is not in tip top shape. Jennifer will do hands-on demos with a number of Members’ machines.
  • Opportunity Quilt: remember to bring your ticket stubs and payments and pick up more ticket books!
  • Quilt Pro Quo: Speaking of the Opportunity Quilt, members from the Orange County MQG will be bringing/showing their Opportunity Quilt at tonight’s meeting — and our own Opportunity Quilt will be shown at their meeting in the spring!
